With “relax” as my word of the year for 2018, I’ve been taking steps to do just that. As part of my “Wellness Wednesday” series, I wanted to share with you my love for aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy uses the aromatic oils of plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. When essential oils are inhaled, aromatic molecules travel to the limbic and olfactory systems of the brain. These control emotions and memory, and directly communicate with the hypothalamus which regulates our autonomic nervous systems. The autonomic nervous system controls all of our unconscious functions, such as breathing, heart rhythm, hormone secretion, and much more.
Woah. That was like a lot of science-y stuff. So what does all that really mean?? Well, in the simplest terms. Essential oils smell good, and they’re good for you! You don’t have to take my word for it. They have endured the test of time, as people throughout history have been using oils for their multitude of benefits.
Diffusers are great for maximizing the benefits of the essential oils. Every morning I wake up, I put a few drops of my favorite therapeutic essential oil into my Art Naturals diffuser, and let it mist through the air for an hour to sometimes three hours, depending on the day. I’ve found using the diffuser really transforms my space and helps me to feel calm and balanced.
Each oil offers different benefits, depending on your current need.
Aid an Ailment:
Eucalyptus or Pine Needle help with respiratory problems and congestion.
Lavender and Patchouli can help rid headaches, nausea and fatigue.
Improve Air Quality:
Lemongrass and Sweet Orange can also improve air quality and reduce pet dust and allergens.
Improve Sleep Quality:
Lavender and Patchouli have relaxation benefits and help improve the quality of our zzz’s
Reduce Stress + Anxiety:
Lavender, Frankincense and rosemary can help ease anxiety and offer peace of mind.
Improve Mood + Mental Clarity:
Frankincense, Peppermint and Tea Tree provides for mental focus
My absolute favorite oils to use are Lavender and Peppermint. In fact, even though Peppermint is more of an uplifting oil, it really helped me through a period of time when I would get such bad anxiety at night, that it caused insomnia. I literally could not sleep without it. Sometimes you find oils that just work for you for certain things. It just takes a little experimentation and seeing what works best!
Is it Pure?
To make sure you are using oils that are pure, you can place one drop of essential oil into a glass of water. If the drop of oil does not mix with the water, it is pure. If the drop gets cloudy and does not stay intact, the essential oil has probably been blended with a synthetic substance that has chemically altered it to solubilize in water.
