Coal Mine Canyon has to be one of the most underrated places in Arizona. I discovered it a couple years back scrolling Instagram, and immediately knew I needed to make a trip to see it one day. To our great surprise when we arrived, this place was completely desolate. We had the whole ENTIRE canyon to ourselves for the afternoon and evening.
The desert landscape here is extra-terrestrial; planetary. There was a heavy silence that was almost overwhelming. It made this place eerily beautiful. From the canyon walls shaped like bone, to the jaw-dropping heights that plummeted hundreds of feet below you, it was easy to feel small and wary of your place here. As we were sitting on the edge of the cliff, watching the falling sun, set into the painted desert – we picked up a lava rock and drew our initials into the sand, maybe to immortalize our time here. Even if it was only for a moment. A parentheses in time. And we felt so grateful for the land and this view.
I highly recommend making a trip to Coal Mine Canyon, in Tuba City, AZ, if you’re looking to explore a place that will leave you in awe.
